Accessible science communication to understand the peoples and ocean's biggest issues,
because… we are oceans (somos oceanos).

Somos OceanoS (SOS 2030) promotes the perspectives of coastal communities on marine ecosystem management and raises awareness of the ecological, social and economic value of various Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) across the world through accessible science communication.

SOS 2030 is a holistic project that will deliver transboundary and transdisciplinary marine ecosystem knowledge in places identified as 'paper MPAs' (MPAs that are legally designated but not effective).

About Us

We are a team of young professionals passionate about communicating to the wide public about climate injustice and marine conservation. Our work is meant to engage with locals and make them aware of their potential as a community to make changes that lead to a healthier sea and more respectful practices.

The leader of this project is Veronica Relano, an ocean leader, public scholar and a PhD researcher at the University of British Columbia investigating Marine Protected Areas and their Peoples. Afraid of her papers not making the impact they are expected to, she started with the ambitious idea of raising the voices of coastal communities through documentaries where the locals are the ones presenting the problems and the solutions to the mismanagement of the Marine Protected Area in which they live.

This project started with a very small amount of funds, and after the UN Ocean Decade endorsed it we are in search of a long-term funding source that can assure the project milestones bringing socio-ecological benefits to different coastal communities of the world.
